Historical Tours in Munich
Walk along the streets of present day Munich and you will still marvel at an array of historical buildings. That is part of why this city has such an unmistakable charm.
Munich traces its roots back to 1158, when it was established as a city due to the significance of salt, a valuable commodity for trade during that era. The transportation of salt from the Salzkammergut region necessitated its passage across the Isar River near Oberföhring en route to western destinations. With Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria establishing his residence in Munich from 1314 to 1347, the city gained early prominence and grew rapidly, boasting over 10,000 residents by 1369. In the early 16th century, Munich further solidified its status as the capital of the region.
Amidst the Second World War, around 45% of the buildings in Munich suffered damage or were completely destroyed. However, through a meticulous process of reconstruction that prioritized historical buildings, coupled with the subsequent economic boom, Munich experienced remarkable growth, transforming into a city with a population reaching millions as early as the 1950s and 1960s.
Munich is one of the most important cultural and artistic metropolises in Europe.
Whilst here, take a trip back to the time of the Bavarian monarchy, visit the summer residence of the electors (German princes) and kings or take a look at the fascinating architecture of the 19th century. Absorb centuries of art and cultural history as you experience Munich’s fascinating diversity, from Nymphenburg Castle to the modern art museum Pinakothek der Moderne.
Located in the northeast, not far from Munich, is the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. This memorial site records more than 1,000,000 visitors from all over the world every year.
In addition to the authentic sites of the atrocities, an archive, a library and a museum also bear witness to the times. The aim of the tour is to provide a basic orientation about the history of Dachau Concentration Camp and the Concentration Camp Memorial Site as well as to deal with the question, “How does this history relate to us today?”
On request, one of our experienced tour guides will accompany you at any time on a tour of this former concentration camp.
